　　美国公司里同事之间最主要的、而且大多数情况下惟一的关系就是工作关系。工作外的接触是有的，但不是必须的。已经成家的人下班后都匆匆往家里赶。对他们来说，和家人一起吃晚饭，陪孩子打球、看书是头等大事。即便到酒吧喝酒一般也是有缘由的，比如有人晋升等。如果不想参加也不用顾虑别人的想法，因为下班后的时间是自己的，怎么支配是个人的事。

　　一般来说，公司越大，同事间的交往越少，小公司反而更有人情味。年底时一些公司会举办大型酒会。有些办公室每个月会举办一次生日聚会，大家围在一起吃蛋糕，唱生日歌。关系好的同事会变成朋友，周末一起吃饭等。单身的同事下班后一起到酒吧里喝几杯也是常有的事。

　　中国人发现和美国同事难于沟通，其中的一个主要原因是，无论在办公室还是在酒吧、餐馆，美国人最热衷的话题好象永远是棒球、橄榄球等。大多数中国人都不懂这些运动，很难插上话。还有一个原因是中国人经常和同事谈论自己的私人问题，而美国同事之间一般很少谈及这些个人隐私。

　　为什么貌似奔放的美国人对谈论私事如此谨慎?为什么矜持的中国同事之间会如此透明?美国人不愿谈太多私事的一个原因是，他们认为那是自己的事情和他人没有任何关系。
