  You Need Courage!

Shortly after I began a career in business, I learned that Carl Weatherup, president of PepsiCo (百事可乐公司), was speaking at the University of Colorado. I tracked down the person handling his schedule and managed to get myself an appointment(46)

So there I was sitting outside the university's auditorium, waiting for the president of PepsiCo. I could hear him talking to the students, and talking, and talking.(47) He was now five minutes over, which dropped my time with him down to 10 minutes. Decision time.

I wrote a note on the back of my business card, reminding him that he had a meeting. "You have a meeting with Jeff Hoye at 2:30 p.m." I took a deep breath, pushed open the doors of the auditorium and walked straight up the middle aisle (过道) toward him as he talked. Mr. Weatherup stopped.(48) Just before I reached the door, I heard him tell the group that he was running late. He thanked them for their attention, wished them luck and walked out to where I was now sitting, holding my breath.

He looked at the card and then at me. "Let me guess," he said. "You're Jeff." He smiled.

  (49)

He spent the next 30 minutes offering me his time, some wonderful stories that I still use, and an invitation to visit him and his group in New York. But what he gave me that I value the most was the encouragement to continue to do as I had done. (50) When things need to happen, you either have the nerve to act or you don't.

A I began breathing again and we grabbed (霸占) an office right there at school and closed the door.

B As I sat listening to him, I knew that I could trust him, and that he deserved every bit of loyalty I could give to him.

C I became alarmed: his talk wasn't ending when it should have.

D He said that it took nerve for me to interrupt him, and that nerve was the key to success in the business world.

E I was told, however, that he was on a tight schedule and only had 15 minutes available after his talk to the business class.

F I handed him the card then I turned and walked out the way I came.

  Read with Greater Speed

Do you have difficulty reading in class? If so,a special reading program that helps match sounds with letters could speed up your brain.

At least one out of every five elementary school students in the US has trouble learning t0 read, even when the students are good at other subjects.____(46)

Researchers from Yale University,US,studied a group of children from New York and

Connecticut State. As part of the study,37 struggling readers received special tutoring

Every day, instructors worked with them on recognizing how written letters represent units of sound called phonemes(音素)____(47)

By the end of the school year, these children could read faster than before. They also made fewer mistakes, and understood more of what they read than they could earlier in the year,

As part of their study, the researchers used a special machine to take action photos of the students’brains. ___(48)This is the same part of the brain that becomes active when good readers read. This activated brain area appears to include a structure that helps people recognize familiar written words quickly. In lower level readers, this structure remains inactive.

A year later, the brain structure was still working hard in the students who had gone through the special tutoring, and they continued to do well in reading tests.___(49)

However, some researchers still doubt the study_____(50)

A Many adults are interested in matching sounds with letters

B The students also practiced reading aloud and spelling

C The biggest challenge for many of these kids, scientists say,is matching sounds with letters.

D Another group in the study who went through a more traditional reading program didn’t show the same progress.

E The pictures showed all increase in activity in the back of the brain on the left side

F They believe that reading without making any noise or linking words to sounds is more efficient.

  Science and Technology

There is a difference between science and technology._________(46). Science has to do with discovering the facts and relationships between observable phenomena in nature and with establishing theories that serve to organize these facts and relationships; technology has to do with tools, techniques, and procedures for applying the findings of science.________(47)

Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who seek to understand the universe and know the truth within the highest degree of accuracy and certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people’s likes or dislikes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things._________(48). But even an unpleasant truth is more than likely to be useful; besides we have the choice of refusing to believe it ! But hardly so with technology; we do not have the choice of refusing to hear the sound produced by a supersonic(超音速的) aircraft flying overhead; we cannot refuse to breathe polluted air._________(49)The purpose of technology is to serve people-people in general, not merely some people; and future generations, not merely those who presently wish to gain advantage for themselves.

__________(50) Many people blame technology itself for widespread pollution, resource depletion(枯竭) and even social decay in general-so much so that the promise of technology is “ obscured “. That promise is a cleaner and healthier world. If wise applications of science and technology do not lead to a better world, what else will?

A Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progress in each.

B Unlike science, progress in technology must be measured in terms of the human factor.

C What scientists discover may shock or anger people ---as did Darwin’s theory of evolution.

D Science and technology are different.

E We are all familiar with the improper use of technology.

F Science is a method of answering theoretical questions; technology is a method of solving practical problems.

  Virtual Driver

Driving involves sharp eyes and keen ears, analyzing with a brain, and coordination between hands, feet and brain. A man has sharp eyes and keen ears, analyzes through his brain, and maintains coordination between his hands and brains. He can control a fast-moving car with different parts of his body.______(1)______Apparently there isn't anyone in the driver's cab, but there is in fact a virtual driverl. This virtual driver has eyes, brains, hands and feet too. The minicameras on each side of the car are its eyes and are responsible for observing the road conditions ahead of it as well as the traffic to its left and right. If you open the boot, you can see the most important part of the automatic driving system: a built-in computer. ____(2)____The brain of the car is responsible for calculating the speeds objects surrounding the car are moving at2, analyzing their position on the road, choosing the right path, and giving orders to the wheel and the control system.

In comparison with the human brain, the virtual driver's best advantage is that it reacts quickly.____(3)____ However, it takes the world's best racecar driver at least one second to react, and this doesn't include the time he needs to take action.

With its rapid reaction and accurate control, the virtual driver can reduce the accident rate on expressways considerably. In this case, is it possible for us to let it have the wheel3 at any time and in any place?____(4)____ With its limited ability to recognize things, the car can now only travel on expressways.

The intelligent car determines its direction by the clear lines that mark the lanes clearly and recognizes vehicles according to their regular shapes.____(5)____ This being the case4, people still have high hopes about driverless cars, and think highly intelligent cars are what the cars of the future should be like5.

  virtual adj.虚拟的 built-in adj.

  coordination n.

  cab n.

  minicamera n.

  boot n.

  1. virtual driver:

  2. The brain of the car is responsible for calculating the speeds objects surrounding the car are moving at ... The brain of the car is responsible for calculating the speeds objects surrounding the car are moving at = The brain is responsible for calculating the speeds at which objects surrounding the car are moving。

  3. have the wheel:

  4. This being the case:虽然情况是这样。This being the case是独立主格结构。

  5. ... highly intelligent cars are what the cars of the future should be like.

  A. Experts say that we cannot do that just yet.

  B. In the near future, intelligent cars will be put into commercial operation.

  C. This is the brain of the car.

  D. But how does an intelligent car control itself?

  E. It completes the processing of the images sent by the cameras within 100 milliseconds.

  F. However, it cannot recognize moving people and bicycles on ordinary roads that have no clear markings on them.

“空1”之后的第一句“Apparently there isn't anyone in the driver's cab ... ”似乎来得有些突然,与前面句子接得很生硬。所以,中间应该有个过渡句。选项D就是连接上下文的过渡句。

  2. C “空2”前面一句意思是,如果你打开车身后部的行李箱,你就能看到自动驾驶系统中最重要的部件,嵌入式计算机。“空2”后的句子中的the brain of the car自然是指前句的built-in computer,但接得太突然。选项C“This is the brain of the car.” this指代上一句的built-in computer。后面句子的the brain of the car是重复选项C中的 the brain of the car,显得很自然。
