  Text 10

Paul, a salesman from London, was driving past a sports car parked outside a supermarket, when he saw it start to roll slowly down the hill. Inside the car were two young girls on the passenger seat, but no driver. Paul stopped quickly, jumped in front of the sports car and tried to stop it, pushing against the front of the car. Another man who was standing nearby got into the car and put on the handbrake, saving the girls from injury.

It was at this point that Paul noticed his own car rolling slowly down the hill and going too fast for him to stop it. It crashed into a bus at the bottom of the hill and was so badly damaged that it had to be pulled away to a garage.

As if this was not bad enough, Paul now found he had no one to blame. He was so busy chasing his car that he didn't get the name of the driver of the sports car, who just came out of the supermarket and drove away without realizing what had happened.

  A

My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced. “Get up. You're going with me to cut grass.”

The idea that my father actually thought I was big enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large yards in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was tired out, but I felt good. I had put in a hard day's labor and had earned $6.

One day my father found some leaves I'd missed and pulled me aside. “Clear away these leaves,” he said firmly, “and don't make me have to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I value the importance of doing a job right the first time. It will never fail to impress the person you are working for.

After two years my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to do lawns(草坪) on our own. Every Saturday during our last two years of high school, we set out early in the morning with the same desire and drive we had gained while working under our father.

Taking care of lawns was not exciting or highpaying, but that didn't matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.

A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live on a fortyhouraweek minimum(最低的) pay. “My father has never worked just forty hours a week, and neither have I,” I replied. “If you're only working forty hours, you probably don't want to do any better than you're doing.”

In every job I've held from doing lawns to washing dishes, I have learned something that helped me in my next job. If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

What should I eat for breakfast? Who should I go out with on weekends? What should I do if I miss the bus to school? What colleges should I apply for? Again and again Chinese kids ask these questions to their teachers and parents. They can't make their own choices.

Kids in America would be very surprised to hear how much Chinese children depend on adults. When they are ten years old, kids decide what clothes they want to wear and buy. By twelve they know what classes to take for middle school. Thirteen years old is the beginning of being what Americans call a “teenager”. Now the child makes almost all his/her decisions — what to do after school; who are his/her friends, sometimes even when to come home at night. Finally at sixteen the kid usually gets a car from his/her parents. Now he or she can come and go when he/she likes. The only rule is when they come home at night.

Why should kids be independent? Think about it. After high school most of us will be by ourselves. Will our parents be able to tell us what to eat for breakfast in college? Can our teachers decide what we should do at work?

Making our own choices can be quite hard and scary. But we can start with making small choices, and then slowly make bigger and more important choices. Before we know it we will become independent, confident and able to make our own decisions! And we will have a lot more fun!

33.The first paragraph tries to tell the readers ________.

  A. Chinese kids don't know what to do

  B. Chinese kids always have many questions

  D. Chinese kids depend on adults very much

  A. Ten. B. Eleven.

  C. Twelve. D. Thirteen.

答案与解析 D 可以从第二段四、五句“Now the child makes almost all his/her decisions”得出答案。

35.Which of the following is TRUE?

  A. Generally, American kids are more independent than their Chinese fellows.

  B. Chinese kids will more easily adapt themselves to society.

  C. American parents don't care for their children.

  D. A seventeen American young can do what he likes.

  42.D 从后面的“so I ... to sit at.”

sit at the table意思是“坐在桌子旁边”;其余三项都不能与at搭配。

50.A at the front page of the newspaper

  55.C 前一句说“I shall have the last piece.”

I believe that everyone in the world loves their mother. So am I. My mother is a ordinary teacher. She works hard at school, just as other mothers do every day. In fact, she isn't good health. She has been suffering from arthritis for many year. In spite of this, she never stops working or giving up hope. I still remember the day and when my mother received a card of congratulations for Teacher's Day from her director. The card reads “Thank you for your hard works; Happy Teacher's Day to you!” At that moment, I was so moving that tears came to my eyes. I am proud of my mother because she is my best teacher as good as my mother.

  Dear_Mr._Green,

I_am_very_excited_to_learn_that_we_are_going_to_start_a_magazine_together. It is indeed a wonderful idea and everyone hopes for its success.

I would like the magazine to have three columns: News, Teachers' Advice and Students' Voice. From the News column we can learn about what is going on in both of our schools. In Teachers' Advice, our teachers can give us such help as we may not be able to get in the classroom. Students' Voice will allow us to freely express our thoughts and feelings about our lives and studies.

I believe that this magazine will surely strengthen our ties, and I am looking forward to reading it.

  Yours_faithfully,

  Li_Hua
