传统的年俗给压岁钱是希望能镇恶驱邪。因为古时候的`人们认为孩子最容易受到鬼祟的侵袭，所以要用压岁钱来帮助压祟，“岁”与“祟”谐音，希望得到压岁钱的孩子能平平安安的度过一年。
自从压岁钱变成了真正的货币之后，压岁钱的意义也发生了改变。压岁钱“避邪去魔”的功能逐渐结束，而其新担负的“一本万利”、“财源茂盛”、“步步高升”等“励志”作用应运而生。

由于生活水平的提高，不少人给的压岁钱也逐渐提高了，也有的长辈由于过于溺爱晚辈，也会将压岁钱提高，甚至有人将压岁钱当作人情，认为给太少则拿不出手，因此会准备大的压岁钱红包。
其实，压岁钱给多少应该根据自己的经济实力以及地方的经济状况，一般来说，给亲戚朋友的孩子的话，几十元到一百元左右都可以了。但有的家庭经济水平较高，也可以根据自己的能力范围来给。
